Position Summary:
The Peer-Review Coordinator is responsible for supporting the peer-review process for the Journal of the Academy of Doctorally Prepared Nurses, ensuring efficient and timely handling of manuscript submissions from initial receipt to editorial decision. The role involves daily interaction with authors, reviewers, and editors, and requires a strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and familiarity with scholarly publishing practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manuscript Processing:
- Manage incoming manuscript submissions using the journal’s online peer-review system (e.g., Editorial Manager, ScholarOne, Gravity Kit, etc).
- Ensure all manuscripts meet basic submission requirements before review.
- Assign submissions to the appropriate handling editor based on subject matter.
- Reviewer Engagement:
- Identify and invite qualified reviewers based on subject expertise and editor suggestions.
- Track reviewer responses and follow up to ensure timely reviews.
- Maintain accurate reviewer records, including performance and availability.
- Communication and Support:
- Serve as a point of contact for authors, reviewers, and editors regarding peer-review procedures and timelines.
- Provide technical assistance and respond promptly to inquiries.
- Workflow Monitoring:
- Track and report on manuscript statuses to ensure smooth editorial workflows.
- Notify the managing editor of delays or issues requiring escalation.
- Support editors in making editorial decisions by compiling review materials and recommendations.
- Quality Control and Ethics:
- Check for potential conflicts of interest, duplicate submissions, or plagiarism.
- Ensure all submissions are handled in accordance with journal policies and industry ethical standards (e.g., COPE guidelines).
Qualifications:
- A terminal degree in nursing is preferred, yet a master’s or bachelor’s degree with a backgrouond in publishing is strongly considered.
- 1–3 years of experience in academic or scholarly publishing, particularly in manuscript management or peer review.
- Familiarity with peer-review tracking systems such as ScholarOne or Editorial Manager.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of academic publishing processes and ethical standards.
- Experience with digital tools such as Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, or project tracking systems.
- Interest in scholarly communication and continuous process improvement.
Work Environment:
This position is fully remote, yet retreats and face-to-face meetings may be a part of the process in the short term and long term. Periodic travel may be required for editorial meetings or conferences.
