Position Summary:
The Associate Editor for Content Development plays a strategic role in shaping the editorial direction and quality of content published in [Journal Name]. This individual is responsible for identifying content opportunities, soliciting high-impact manuscripts, developing special issues, and supporting the journal’s mission to advance scholarly discourse in its field. The associate editor works closely with the editorial team, contributors, and reviewers to cultivate original, timely, and relevant peer-reviewed content.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Strategy & Development:
- Collaborate with the editor-in-chief to identify emerging trends, gaps, and priority areas in the field.
- Proactively commission invited articles, commentaries, reviews, or special issues that align with the journal’s scope and audience.
- Develop content calendars and thematic collections in partnership with guest editors or advisory boards.
Editorial Oversight:
- Manage peer review for commissioned or solicited manuscripts, ensuring rigor, fairness, and timeliness.
- Evaluate manuscript submissions for originality, relevance, and quality prior to assigning to reviewers or editorial board members.
- Support the development of author guidelines and editorial standards for specific article types (e.g., Perspectives, Case Studies).
Contributor Engagement:
- Build and maintain relationships with researchers, practitioners, and thought leaders to encourage submissions.
- Collaborate with guest editors and contributors to guide content from proposal through to final publication.
- Coordinate outreach for calls for papers and promotional campaigns for new content or themed issues.
Quality Assurance:
- Ensure consistency in editorial voice, scientific accuracy, and adherence to ethical standards (e.g., COPE, ICMJE).
- Collaborate with production and copyediting teams to ensure quality in final published content.
Performance Monitoring:
- Track citation metrics, download rates, and readership data to assess the impact of developed content.
- Recommend improvements based on content performance and reader feedback.
Qualifications:
- A nurse with a terminal degree.
- 3+ years of editorial experience in scholarly publishing, ideally with experience in content commissioning or development.
- Deep understanding of the peer-review process, academic publishing standards, and journal operations.
- Excellent writing, editing, and project management skills.
- Strong professional network within the academic and practice community is a plus.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience planning special issues or thematic collections.
- Familiarity with publishing platforms (e.g., ScholarOne, Editorial Manager).
- Ability to interpret journal metrics and use them to inform content strategy.
- Competency in SEO and digital content dissemination is a plus.
Work Environment:
This position is fully remote, yet retreats and face-to-face meetings may be a part of the process in the short term and long term. Periodic travel may be required for editorial meetings or conferences.
