Position Summary:

A manuscript peer reviewer plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality, credibility, and integrity of the scholarly content published in the Journal of the Academy of Doctorally Prepared Nurses. Peer reviewers are subject-matter experts who critically evaluate submitted manuscripts to assess their originality, validity, clarity, and contribution to the field. Their feedback informs editorial decisions and helps authors improve the rigor and presentation of their research.


Key Responsibilities:

Manuscript Evaluation:

  • Conduct timely, thorough, and objective reviews of manuscripts within your area of expertise.
  • Assess scientific soundness, originality, methodological quality, clarity, and relevance to the journal’s scope.
  • Identify strengths, weaknesses, inconsistencies, or ethical concerns (e.g., plagiarism, data integrity).

Constructive Feedback:

  • Provide clear, respectful, and detailed comments to help authors improve their work.
  • Offer actionable recommendations while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Complete reviewer reports and recommend an editorial decision (accept, revise, or reject) based on journal criteria.

Collaboration with Editors:

  • Communicate promptly with editors regarding availability and conflicts of interest.
  • Inform editors of any concerns or suspicions about data, ethics, or authorship.
  • Suggest alternative reviewers when unavailable or if a manuscript falls outside your expertise.

Qualifications:

  • A nurse with a terminal degree, or equivalent advanced degree, in a relevant academic or professional field.
  • Demonstrated expertise and a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Familiarity with scientific methods, scholarly writing, and the standards of academic publishing.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and upholding ethical review practices.

Preferred Experience:

  • Prior experience reviewing for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Familiarity with journal-specific guidelines or peer-review platforms (e.g., ScholarOne, Editorial Manager).
  • Awareness of industry standards such as COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.

Time Commitment:

  • Review assignments are occasional and based on expertise and availability (typically 2–6 reviews per year).
  • Deadlines for reviews are usually 2–3 weeks from acceptance of invitation.
